Adele just a common London lass

Chart-topping British singer Adele may have reached the heights of global music success, but the down-to-earth songstress sees herself as far from special, claiming to be 'as common as muck'.

The 23-year-old, whose album 21 has found Australian success, spending its 22nd week atop the ARIA albums chart, denied that fame, money and numerous awards have changed her from a working-class London girl.

'American people think I am posh even though I am really not,' Adele told British tabloid the Sun.

'They think I have a very posh accent, as in do you know the Queen?'.

'I just laugh at them. In England, I am thought of as common as muck.'

Adele has been repeatedly quoted as saying she would prefer to spend time at home on the couch with her mates watching television than rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous.

'I am pretty oblivious to everything. I'm not very in touch with the fame side of things, it doesn't interest me at all,' said Adele, who lives with her mother and a pet dog, despite having enough cash for them each to live in a luxury mansion.

'My mum calls me Jenny when we're out in public because if she starts shouting Adele' in a big department store people are going to look around and it gets awkward.'

As Adele continues to recover from a string of illnesses, including laryngitis, a chest infection and haemorrhage on her vocal chords, which have forced her to cancel a number of UK and US tour dates, the star is taking comfort in her favourite pastimes: handbag shopping and baking.
