21 didn't come out this year but Adele's sophomore album is on it's way to becoming the top selling album for 2012. In fact, 21 is the only album to sell over a million copies this year thus far based on Nielsen Soundscan figures, making it the top selling album in the US for the second year in the row.

Lionel Richie comes in second with 910,000 copies for Tuskegee while One Direction slides into third place with 899,000 sold for Up All Night.

In the digital race, Gotye broke Katy Perry's E.T. record for most downloads in six months of one year. Furthermore, Gotye featuring Kimbra's Somebody That I Used To Know is the first ever song to pass the five million mark in six months.
