Los Angeles (CNN) -- Adele thanked her doctors "who brought my voice back" as she accepted her third Grammy award Sunday night, with three more wins possible before the evening concludes.

The 23-year-old British songstress Adele, who underwent surgery for "recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage" in November, will sing later in the show, ending speculation about her recovery.

The first Grammy handed out in the live telecast was given to Adele for best pop solo performance, which she earned with her song "Someone Like You."

She won two Grammys in the pre-telecast ceremony for best short form music video for "Rolling In The Deep" and best pop vocal album for "21."

Jay-Z and Kanye West won for best rap performance for their collaboration "Otis." It was the fourth Grammy won by West Sunday, with a fifth possible later in the show for the rapper.

Tributes to Whitney Houston, who died suddenly Saturday, were frequent in the first half-hour of the telecast, including a replay of her memorable Grammy performance of "I Will Always Love You."

Host LL Cool J said a prayer for Houston in the first minutes for the 54th annual awards show, which is being telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

A "respectful musical tribute" by Jennifer Hudson is planned for later in the show, producers said.

Ali! cia Keye s and Bonnie Raitt sang a musical tribute to legendary singer Etta James, who died last month.

The show is also expected to provide emotion and drama because of a "goodbye" performance by Glen Campbell and a Beach Boys reunion.

Campbell, 75, launched his "Goodbye Tour" last year after revealing he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Campbell will be joined by current Grammy nominees Blake Shelton and The Band Perry for a live performance as part of a tribute to the five-time Grammy winner, the Recording Academy said.

The Beach Boys will reunite for their first appearance in two decades, taking the stage with Foster The People and Maroon 5.

Three years after the Chris Brown's infamous pre-Grammys arrest for the beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna, the 22-year-old singer performed at the Grammys. Brown was scheduled to perform during the 2009 show, but the altercation after the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party ended his welcome.

Although Brown was nominated for three Grammys last year he did not attend the past two years. He is up for three Grammys this year.

His ex, Rihanna, has since attended and performed at the show. Nominated for album of the year, among other honors, Rihanna will perform at Sunday's show with Coldplay.
