Adele notches up two Ivor Novello songwriting awards

Reuters 51 mins ago LONDON (Reuters) - British singer Adele won two Ivor Novello awards for songwriting on Thursday, adding to a lengthening list of musical accolades, but she lost out in the best album and song categories . The 24-year-old chart queen picked up two coveted Ivor Novello prizes for the most performed song of 2011 (" Rolling in the Deep ") and songwriter of the year. She was also nominated for best song musically and lyrically ( Rolling in the Deep ) but was beaten by Ed Sheeran 's "The A Team", and in the album category Adele's record-breaking "21" was shortlisted but lost out to PJ Harvey 's "Let England Shake". In a year dominated by female artists, it was little surprise to see rising U.S. star Lana Del Rey win the best contemporary song award for "Video Games", co-written by Briton Justin Parker. Adele has picked up two prizes at the Ivor Novello songwriting awards today, including Songwriter of the Year. 1 of 1 However, PJ Harvey's Let England Shake beat Adele's 21 and Kate Bush's 50 Words for Snow to the Album Award. Adele received nominations in four categories at the event, which honours the best of British and Irish music. She went home with one of the most prestigious awards, for Best Songwriter, as well as the PRS for Music Most Performed Work prize for Rolling in the Deep . New sensation Lana Del Rey's breakthrough hit Video Games won her the honour of Best Contemporary Song, while fellow chart sensation Ed Sheeran's The A Team was named the Best Song Musically and Lyrically. Some of the biggest names in the music business are expected to be at the Ivor Novello Awards on Thursday. The annual awards - in their 57th year - are highly prized because they are voted for by songwriters and composers. In the past they have attracted names including Sir Paul McCartney , Johnny Marr and Stevie Winwood. This year's ceremony, at the Grosvenor House Hotel , central London, looks set to be dominated by Adele who picked up a string of nominations for the Ivor Novello Awards. Singer Adele has reached another milestone as her career continues to soar - she's become the fourth British star in five years to record the world's biggest-selling album. The singer has now shifted 18 million copies of her record 21, accounting for 1.6 per cent of total album sales around the world. It means she follows her fellow Brits Amy Winehouse, Coldplay and Susan Boyle, who have all topped the international album sales chart since 2007.

British acts claimed 12.6 per cent of global music sales in 2011, up from 11.8 per cent in 2010, accounting for one in eight of all artist albums sold. Sales were boosted by Adele, who became the fourth British artist in five years to achieve the best-selling album in the world following Amy Winehouse, Coldplay and Susan Boyle in previous years. The singer's second album '21' has sold 18 million copies, accounting for 1.6 per cent of all albums sold worldwide. "I walked through Trafalgar Square on a Saturday afternoon -- tourist haven -- in pajamas," the multi-Grammy winner told NBC's Matt Lauer in the upcoming "Adele Live in London" special. "I'm always in black," she added. "It was this tracksuit, with a massive green coat and little pink pumps. I had this massive umbrella so no one recognized me."
