Adele, Bruno Mars, Kanye West lead Grammy nominations, Drake takes three

Adele and Bruno Mars are set to compete in every major Grammy category, while Canadians Drake and Deadmau5 received three nods apiece as the annual awards bash announced its nominations on Wednesday night. While Adele and Mars took six nominations each including nods for album, song and record of the year the overall lead belonged to Chicago rapper Kanye West, a seven-time nominee heading into the Feb. 12 awards show. Still, West was shut out of the evening's marquee category, with his critically beloved masterwork "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" failing to make the cut for album of the year consideration. Instead, Adele's mournful juggernaut "21" and Mars' hit-packed "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" will compete with Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," and Rihanna's "Loud." The Foo Fighters also had six nominations while dubstep star Skrillex provided one of the evening's su...

Adele could be rolling in Grammy nominations

She likely won't get "21," but Adele is poised to take the biggest share of nods when the Grammy nominations are announced Wednesday night. The British singer-songwriter has had a great year, thanks to her sophomore album, "21." The mournful album about a failed relationship is the year's best-selling disc with more than 4.5 million copies sold. It has resulted in two smash singles, "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You." The Recording Academy will likely add to Adele's achievements. She is a strong contender to get bids for album of the year and for song and/or record of the year for the searing groove "Rolling in the Deep." But she's not the only favorite for top nominations. Taylor Swift's multiplatinum "Speak Now" is a possible contender for album of the year, as is Tony Bennett's "Duets II," which marked the 85-year-old's first album to debut at No. 1, making him the oldest arti...

Adele using app to speak

Adele has been using a special phone application to help her speak. The British singer underwent surgery on her throat a few weeks ago and has been told to rest her voice by doctors. She loves talking to friends though, so has come up with a novel way to ensure she is still heard. Adele has downloaded a special application on her phone which says anything she types in out loud. She's been using the speaking app to buy coffee at Starbucks and to order cabs, a source explained to British newspaper The Sun. It is far easier to communicate using it rather than writing everything down on paper and showing people. Adele had a vocal cord haemorrhage which was operated on in Boston, America, in early November. She is still in the city as she recuperates, but has assured fans the surgery was a success. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever, the star explained. The 23-year-old singer has previously been forced to cancel shows du...

Someone like Adele

Image
The success of Adele is baffling. Her second album, 21 , has sold more than 10 million copies. Staggering considering nobody buys albums anymore - is the Adele fan its own separate beast? It would seem that's possible. Last night I watched Adele: Live at the Royal Albert Hall . I do this so that you don't have to. Understand, I'm not just arriving at the Adele phenomenon now. I was in on the ground floor with this. Her debut record, 19 , arrived for me to review. I thought it was okay. I liked the fact that her voice was a bit wobbly - she seemed to take risks. I thought the songwriting was naive and, at times, close enough to amateur-hour. But there seemed to be some thought; possibly some passion...and then it seemed Adele was (largely) forgotten. Don't get me wrong, 19 was no dud - but it didn't suggest a huge future for Adele - she was just one of the crop. You could believe she was different - something special, something not so contrived, but that's for y...

Album review: Adele's 'Live at the Royal Albert Hall'

Image
The release date for Adeles Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD (which also includes a 90-minute concert DVD) is auspicious, and not because it comes just in time for the holidays. It reminds us of what Adeles recent throat surgery sought to preserve: her rich and lusty voice that soars to whatever blustery cliffs the songs demand. Listening to Adele on these 17 songs recorded in her hometown earlier this fall is a bit like watching a pro running back score a touchdown. Theres a great athleticism to her vocals, as she dashes and twists her way through thickets of melody. Sometimes she reserves her energy, dodging around the note; other times she pins it down with a stylish growl. Reliving the songs as she sings them, Adele occasionally lets out a satisfied cackle, like at the end of If It Hadnt Been for Love, a train-yard blues number that could almost be in Tom Waits repertoire. Sauntering through the bubbly Bacharach-style jazz on Right as Rain from her debut 19, you can hear the smile ...

Adele never told ex-bfs she loved them

Soul singer Adele has written letters to her ex-boyfriends to let them know she loved them, as she never said the words while they were together. The Someone Like You singer has found fame singing about her lost loves, but she confesses she's never uttered the words 'I love you' to any of her partners - because she struggles to open up about her feelings in her private life. But Adele tells Cosmopolitan magazine she recently decided to right her past wrongs by penning heartfelt notes to the exes she did have strong feelings for after taking heed of a pal's wise words. 'It's so hard for me to share my feelings,' she says. 'I've actually never told a guy that I loved him. I've felt them; I just can't say them. My friend recently convinced me how important it is for guys to know that. 'I wound up writing letters to all the men I've been with, telling them that I did feel that for them.'

Adele Reveals Her From-the-Heart Inspiration for 'My Same'

Adele has earned a loyal following of fans who hang onto her every word when she sings about heartbreak and heartache. But the Grammy-winning singer with a knack for writing about the men who broke her heart was inspired by another special somebody when she wrote the song "My Same" for her 2008 album 19 . Adele, who is " doing well " following throat surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal chord , wrote the song for her best friend Laura, she explains in an exclusive clip from a DVD recording of her performance at London's Royal Albert Hall ( available in the U.S. on Nov. 29 ). RELATED: Adele 'Super Happy' After Successful Throat Surgery "I'm sure you could really tell how different we are," she tells the audience of her best friend, who was seated in the crowd. "She wears bright colors. I wear black." Although they've been friends since Adele was 14, the two had a falling out before she went on tour for 19 . Luckily, it didn'...

Adele shines a light live on DVD

Grade: A- DVD If you havent jumped onto the Adele train yet, her new live DVD "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" presents the perfect opportunity to get on track. The soulful contralto had vocal cord surgery the first week of this month, so luckily this was recorded on Sept. 22. The beautifully shot video features the full 90-minute, 17-song performance, plus special behind-the-scenes footage of the 23-year-old Brit. (Her goofy banter with the audience contrasts sharply with her soundtrack of defeated heartbreak.) The package also includes an exclusive live CD of the entire show. This is the first time all of Adeles hits and most-loved songs will be on one CD, and the concert-ending succession of Bonnie Raitts "I Cant Make You Love Me," Bob Dylans "Make You Feel My Love" (dedicated to Amy Winehouse), "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" are devastating and heart-felt. Adeles tears are the end are real, and well-earned. David Burg...

Drake's Rise and Adele's Record on the Album Charts

This week on the pop music charts, Drake has a big opening and Adele breaks a record set by Michael Jackson. Drake, the rapper and singer , who acted in the teen television show Degrassi: The Next Generation, sailed to No. 1 with 631,000 copies of his latest release, Take Care (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Republic), sold. That was less than the 700,000 that some chart-watchers had been expecting (or hoping for), but it was still the third-biggest opening of the year, behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne . It was also a good week for holiday albums: Michael Bubls Christmas (143/Reprise) held at No. 2 with 165,000 albums sold, a 35 percent gain from the week before, while Justin Biebers Under the Mistletoe (Island Def Jam) climbed one spot to No. 5 with 84,000 units. She tied for most wins with London-born singer Adele , who also earned three trophies for female pop artist, best album with smash hit 21 and top adult contemporary performer. But Adele, who came into the awards show as the most-nominated singer with four nods, lost artist of the year to Swift, who seemed genuinely surprised by the upset victory. "This is one of the craziest things that has ever happened to me," Swift said. "I have no idea what I'm supposed to say. I did not think this was going to happen.'" Along with year's top artist, Swift claimed AMA trophies for favorite female country artist for the second straight year, and she nabbed best country album with her Speak Now .

Adele sparkles on new concert DVD

Adele tops off an astoundingly successful year with the concert DVD and CD "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" ( * * * out of four stars, out Nov. 29 on Columbia), recorded less than two months ago at the prestigious venue in London, England. The best way to experience this performance is by sitting down with the DVD, which is crisply shot and contains the full 90-minute show, including the down-to-earth British singer's hilarious, often potty-mouthed chatter between songs. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins does fine versions of tracks taken off her two albums, "19" and "21," relying more on material from the latter, this year's hottest selling album by far. Although in generally good vocal form throughout, she avoids the tough-to-reach high notes on the affecting ballad "Someone Like You," allowing the supportive audience to sing a few choruses. Shortly after this gig, recurring voice problems forced her to cancel all remaining concerts this year an...

Adele Makes History Recap

. On Wednesday Adele Makes History was a top story. Here is the recap: (Gibson) Adele is the first artist to sell a million units of an album on iTunes in Europe. According to U.K. music trade magazine, Music Week, her album 21 racked up those sales in just under a year. Music Week quotes a music business consultant as saying that the record was a "great landmark for digital album sales." "This is a positive news for the music industry and Apple's iTunes has done a great job of helping to sell digital albums," he said. "However, mass buying of digital albums is swimming against the tide and is getting rarer. Most people now like consuming music as singles and a growing number either stream songs or watch the videos on YouTube. Fewer and fewer people download entire albums to own." - more on this story Gibson.com is an official news provider for the antiMusic.com. Copyright Gibson.com - Excerpted here with permission.

Adele breaks iTunes record in Europe

Soul sensation Adele has become the first artist to break the one million album sales barrier via online music retailer iTunes.com in Europe. The British singer's 21 was named the biggest-selling digital album in US history earlier this year, and now Adele has been crowned the queen of Europe, too. Download sales of 21 have reached record-breaking figures in the 11 months since its release in January. Adele underwent the operation to fix a recurrent throat condition in Boston, Massachusetts in November. The surgery forced the star to cancel her tour dates for the rest of 2011.

Adele - Turning Down Adele 'makes Me Feel Sick', Says Hot Chip Star

Adele 's second album '21' has undoubtedly been the success story of the year, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and topping both the U.S. and UK Albums charts - though its phenomenal commercial success had led one songwriter to feel a little unwell. Joe Goddard, musical guru and percussionist in electronic indie band Hot Chip, is also an in-demand DJ and songwriter. However, during an interview with Contactmusic.com, Joe revealed he turned down the opportunity to work with Adele on one of the biggest albums of the year. When asked of his biggest career regret, Goddard laughed, saying, "There was talk of me and Alexis (Taylor) doing writing sessions with Adele for her latest album which has just become so massive this year". Goddard's hectic DJ'ing schedule and work with Hot Chip meant the pair turned down the offer, saying, "So I guess I wish that we had done that rather than not making time for it. I think that she is an incredible artist and...

Coldplay And Emma Stone Are No Match For Adele's 'Someone Like You'

Image
Posted 3 hrs ago by John Mitchell in Adele , Coldplay , Television Adele 's music is widely acclaimed for its emotional resonance and it seems that the diva's voice and powerful lyrics can reduce even the world's biggest band and one of Hollywood's top up-and-comers to tears. That was the joke during a sketch on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. In the skit, Emma Stone and Co. played officemates who discover that whenever you need a good cry, Adele's "Someone Like You" is the perfect track to turn to. So secretly universal is breaking down to Adele's hit that Kristen Wiig's character declares, "Everyone with a heart and an iTunes account does it." Later, in a bit of behind-the-scenes fun, we see this week's musical guest Coldplay losing it while watching the sketch on a monitor. This was Stone's second time hosting the show and she proved once again that her natural comic timing and graceful presence make one of the...
