Jack White's 'Blunderbuss' Bumps Adele Off U.K. Chart Throne

Jack White's first solo album "Blunderbuss" replaced his XL Recordings labelmate Adele's "21" at the top of the U.K. album chart yesterday (Sunday). Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" withstood the latest pretender to her singles chart crown, "Let's Go" by Calvin Harris featuring Ne-Yo, to secure a fourth week at No. 1.

"Blunderbuss" soundly beat its fellow XL release, with sales to midnight Saturday of 40,000 compared to 15,000 for "21." White previously topped the U.K. chart with the White Stripes' "Elephant" in 2003 and "Icky Thump" in 2007.

Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die" rose 4-3, its highest position since its third chart week in late February, as another former No. 1, Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday - Roman Reloaded," dipped 3-4. Rufus Wainwright debuted at No. 5 with "Out of the Game," his second U.K. top five album after "Release The Stars" debuted at No. 2 in 2007.

Alabama Shakes' "Boys & Girls," which opened at No. 3 two weeks ago, climbed back 9-6 to give independent labels three of the top six artist albums this week. Olly Murs also climbed back 12-7 with "In Case You Didn't Know," which debuted at No. 1 last December.

Welsh rock stalwarts Feeder opened at No. 13 with their latest set, "Generation Freakshow"; the band have been charting consistently in the U.K. for 15 years and have six top ten albums to their name, including consecutive No. 2 peaks with 2005's "Pushing The Senses" and "The Singles" in 2007. On the compilation chart, "Now That's What I Call Music 81" is No. 1 for a fourth week.

Jepsen's total U.K. sales for "Call Me Maybe" are now 434,000, according to the Official Charts Company, and it's already the seventh-bestselling track of 2012. With Harris' new single in at No. 2, "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae rested at No. 3, with Conor Maynard's "Can't Say No" down 2-4 and Jessie J's "Laserlight," featuring David Guetta, steady at No. 5. British singer-songwriter Alex Clare's first hit "Too Close" contin! ued to c limb, 16-6, as did Train's "Drive By," 14-10. Clare's track is currently gaining additional exposure as the soundtrack of Internet Explorer's TV ad campaign.
